Cyclone Hamish

In Brisbane this morning I convened the State Disaster Managers Coordinating Group with a telephone hook-up to all disaster management groups along the coast in relation to Cyclone Hamish.

“Thankfully, major flooding in Mackay has been avoided. About 3,000 people – 1,000 of them campers – are today being evacuated from Fraser Island and evacuations have also taken place from Herron and Lady Elliot Islands as a precaution. Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of all Queenslanders as coastal communities from Bundaberg to Hervey Bay remain on alert. The Coordinating Group will reconvene at 5pm.”
